History

Sistema Museale Agno-Chiampo (Agno-Chiampo Museum Network) is a joint initiative undertaken by nine neighbouring towns in the western part of the province of Vicenza, with the purpose of managing more effectively and efficiently the archaeological and naturalistic patrimony of the area.

All the nine towns involved have signed an agreement to establish the rules for decision-making and for sharing expenses, and all participate in an integrated way in the programming of activities.
The Museum “Zannato” of Montecchio Maggiore is the place in which items of interest found in the whole area (see map) are deposited, studied and exposed, functioning as a common Museum for the nine towns. It is also the operating centre in which all the activities (having been previously agreed upon by all partners) are actually carried out and accounted for.
Most of the nine partner towns have local facilities for the performing of educational and other activities provided or supervised by the Museum.

The Network came into being in 2001, following an initial proposal by Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici del Veneto. Initially seven towns were involved ( Arzignano, Castelgomberto, Montebello, Montorso, Trissino, Zermeghedo and of course Montecchio Maggiore). Sovizzo joined in 2005 and Brendola in 2006.
In the year 2007 the Museum was completely refurbished, considerably increasing its dimensions and opening 5 new room, bringing the total up to 12. A thirteenth room was added in 2014.
