Showcase of Italian fossil crustaceans

This showcase is dedicated to specimens from various Italian regions: Friuli, Piedmont, Puglia, Sardinia, Tuscany.
The oldest date back to the Late Triassic (about 220 million years ago) of Preone (Udine) and belong to the species Dusa longipes.
For the Oligocene (about 30 million years ago), there are examples of Coeloma vigil and Portunus ristorii from Piedmont.
For the Miocene of Sardinia (about 15 million years ago), there are examples of Necronectes schafferi and Portunus monspeliensis that preserved their exoskeleton.
Eriphia cocchii is known for the Pliocene of Tuscany (about 4 million years ago) and Cancer sismondai, a species from warm-temperate coastal environment, was widespread in the Mediterranean during the Miocene-Pleistocene.

“G. Meneguzzo” showcase

This showcase is dedicated to Giovanni Meneguzzo (1831-1912), an extraordinary geological guide from Montecchio.
On display there are historical documents, including a medal for his patriotic merits and a copy of Table III of his work on “Stratigraphy of the province of Vicenza in correlation with that of Treviso and Verona”, which Meneguzzo presented in 1868 at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza during the third Italian Congress of Naturalists. There are also fossils collected by him and some dedicated to him, as the gastropod Cerithium meneguzzoi, classified by the Austrian paleontologist Fuchs in 1870 and of which the Meneguzzo had collected several specimens in the Oligocene formation of Castelgomberto.
