Since 1994, the museum has published its own scientific journal, Studies and Research, as well as a number of monographs and articles of a naturalistic or archaeological nature.
The Editorial Board annually evaluates the publication of contributions of high scientific value. Unpublished works concerning topics within the field of natural sciences and archaeology are considered for publication, with preference given to those concerning the Veneto region and in particular the Vicenza area; a maximum of 2 articles per Author/Co-Author can be published.
The papers are first evaluated by the Editorial Board of the Journal, which submits them for peer review by external experts: articles that do not respect the relevance of the journal or are manifestly far from the quality standards of the Journal may be directly rejected by the Editorial Board. There is no cost to Authors for publication.

Essendo i calcoli vescicali simili alle pietre, il primo passo nella cura della calcolosi vescicale è di approfondire le conoscenze delle loro caratteristiche mineralogiche e chimiche per poter migliorare i metodi chirurgici, diminuendo la mortalità dei pazienti e soprattutto individuare altri mezzi per “cavar la pietra” senza ricorrere a pericolosi e dolorosi interventi.
Impegnativa sarà la vagheggiata ricerca di sostanze liquide (litontritici) che, introdotte nell’organismo come bevande o diretta¬mente in vescica, possano sciogliere e ridurre i calcoli più voluminosi e farli così uscire direttamente per vie naturali con l’urina, ricerche iniziate fin dall’antichità ma che si rivelano essere di scarsa efficacia.
La presente comunicazione riporta l’opera di medici, mineralogisti e chimici della prima metà dell’Ottocento, quando la medicina e le scienze di base acquisiscono metodi che consentono di approfondire le ricerche.

“Stone disease”, bladder calculi, is a pathology known since ancient times and numerous scientists have studied and fought this disease over the centuries, a commitment delegated, at the beginning, mainly to surgery.
Since bladder concretions are similar to stones, the first step in the treatment of calculi in the bladder is to deepen the knowledge of their mineralogical and chemical characteristics in order to improve surgical methods, reducing patient mortality and above all to identify other means of “extracting the stone” without resorting to dangerous and painful surgical operation. Demanding will be the long-awaited search for liquid substances (lithontritics) which, introduced into the body as drinks or direct¬ly into the bladder, can dissolve and reduce the largest stones and thus make them come out directly through natural channels with the urine, researches begun since antiquity but which turn out to be of lacking effectiveness.
This paper reports the work of doctors, mineralogists and chemists of the first half of the nineteenth century, when medicine and basic sciences acquired methods that allowed for more in-depth researches.},

La “Malattia della pietra” o calcolosi vescicale, è una patologia nota fin dall’antichità e numerosi sono gli uomini di scienza che si sono occupati di studiare e combattere questa affezione nel corso dei secoli, impegno delegato, agli inizi, prevalentemente alla chirurgia.
Essendo i calcoli vescicali simili alle pietre, il primo passo nella cura della calcolosi vescicale è di approfondire le conoscenze delle loro caratteristiche mineralogiche e chimiche per poter migliorare i metodi chirurgici, diminuendo la mortalità dei pazienti e soprattutto individuare altri mezzi per “cavar la pietra” senza ricorrere a pericolosi e dolorosi interventi.

Essendo i calcoli vescicali simili alle pietre, il primo passo nella cura della calcolosi vescicale è di approfondire le conoscenze delle loro caratteristiche mineralogiche e chimiche per poter migliorare i metodi chirurgici, diminuendo la mortalità dei pazienti e soprattutto individuare altri mezzi per “cavar la pietra” senza ricorrere a pericolosi e dolorosi interventi.
Impegnativa sarà la vagheggiata ricerca di sostanze liquide (litontritici) che, introdotte nell’organismo come bevande o diretta¬mente in vescica, possano sciogliere e ridurre i calcoli più voluminosi e farli così uscire direttamente per vie naturali con l’urina, ricerche iniziate fin dall’antichità ma che si rivelano essere di scarsa efficacia.
La presente comunicazione riporta l’opera di medici, mineralogisti e chimici della prima metà dell’Ottocento, quando la medicina e le scienze di base acquisiscono metodi che consentono di approfondire le ricerche.
ABSTRACT
“Stone disease”, bladder calculi, is a pathology known since ancient times and numerous scientists have studied and fought this disease over the centuries, a commitment delegated, at the beginning, mainly to surgery.
Since bladder concretions are similar to stones, the first step in the treatment of calculi in the bladder is to deepen the knowledge of their mineralogical and chemical characteristics in order to improve surgical methods, reducing patient mortality and above all to identify other means of “extracting the stone” without resorting to dangerous and painful surgical operation. Demanding will be the long-awaited search for liquid substances (lithontritics) which, introduced into the body as drinks or direct¬ly into the bladder, can dissolve and reduce the largest stones and thus make them come out directly through natural channels with the urine, researches begun since antiquity but which turn out to be of lacking effectiveness.
This paper reports the work of doctors, mineralogists and chemists of the first half of the nineteenth century, when medicine and basic sciences acquired methods that allowed for more in-depth researches.

Questo lavoro ha messo a confronto le statistiche di utilizzo degli utenti di Facebook ed Instagram in risposta a due campagne di comunicazione sulle pagine social del Museo Zannato: una di informazione scientifica generalista e una specialistica su un progetto di ricerca. Non sono state rilevate differenze significative tra Instagram e Facebook, probabilmente dovute ad un pubblico condiviso tra le due piattaforme. È invece emersa una differenza significativa tra le due strategie di comunicazione, dimostrando come sia possibile comunicare temi complessi su canali istituzionali sui social network, calibrando opportunamente il messaggio. Sono state infine discusse alcune strategie per migliorare la comunicazione scientifica museale rivolta alle le nuove generazioni, anche utilizzando le Intelligenze Artificiali.

Social networks are now one of the main channels of information for the general public, although they have inherent limitations in terms of duration and content development, usually aimed at simplification and immediacy in order to maximize attention. Traditional science popularization is also adapting to these channels by reflecting on the best strategies for not losing attractiveness while retaining the quality and complexity of content. Of particular interest is Generation Z, teenagers and young adults, a very large audience that currently seems to be penalized in this regard by the preferential use of social networks, such as Instagram, aimed more at the representation of content than its in-depth study, posing a considerable communicative challenge to science communication, particularly the institutional communication of Museums. This paper compared the usage statistics of Facebook and Instagram users in response to two communication campaigns on the Zannato Museum’s social pages: one of generalist scientific information and one specialized on a research project. No significant differences were found between Instagram and Facebook, probably due to a shared audience between the two platforms. A significant difference emerged between the two communication strategies, demonstrating how it is possible to communicate complex issues on institutional channels on social networks by appropriately calibrating the message. Finally, some strategies for improving museum science communication aimed at the younger generation, involving also Artificial Intelligences, were discussed.},

Flatworm shower: ecological preferences and unusual associations of the alien flatworms Obama and Caenoplana (Platyhelminthes: Geoplanidae) in the Veneto region
Obama nungara is one of the South American species of terrestrial flatworm that has spread to several European countries in recent years, including Italy, through human activities. Following the discovery in the Veneto region, near the town of Este in the province of Padua, of the first established stable population of this species, the temperature, humidity and weather conditions have been monitored where the specimens were collected. The relationship between specimens found and rainfall events is highlighted here in order to better understand the ecological preferences and possible monitoring strategies for this species. A key to the field identification of alien flatworms present in the Veneto region is also provided to support citizen science monitoring, currently one of the most valuable tools in this field. At the same site, a specimen of Caenoplana sp. was also collected during the monitoring of Obama nungara, an event that opens a wider discussion on possible dynamics of spread and interaction between different alien species of invasive land flatworms and a possible underestimation of their real presence in Italy.

The relationship between specimens found and rainfall events is highlighted here in order to better understand the ecological preferences and possible monitoring strategies for this species. A key to the field identification of alien flatworms present in the Veneto region is also provided to support citizen science monitoring, currently one of the most valuable tools in this field. At the same site, a specimen of Caenoplana sp. was also collected during the monitoring of Obama nungara, an event that opens a wider discussion on possible dynamics of spread and interaction between different alien species of invasive land flatworms and a possible underestimation of their real presence in Italy.

Obama nungara è una delle specie sudamericane di planarie terrestri che negli ultimi anni si è diffusa in diversi paesi europei, tra cui l’Italia, attraverso le attività antropiche. In seguito al ritrovamento in Veneto presso la cittadina di Este in provincia di Padova della prima popolazione stabile accertata di questa specie, è stato avviato un monitoraggio delle condizioni di temperatura, umidità e del meteo in cui gli esemplari venivano ritrovati e successivamente raccolti. Viene qui evidenziato il legame tra i ritrovamenti di esemplari di questa planaria terrestre, correlati con eventi di intensa piovosità, chiarendo meglio le preferenze ecologiche e le possibili strategie di monitoraggio per questa specie. Viene inoltre qui fornita una chiave per l’identificazione sul campo delle specie di planarie aliene presenti in Veneto, per supportare il monitoraggio attraverso la citizen science, al momento uno degli strumenti più validi in questo senso. Nello stesso sito, durante il monitoraggio di Obama nungara è stato inoltre raccolto un esemplare di Caenoplana sp., evento che apre una discussione più ampia su possibili dinamiche di diffusione e interazione tra diverse specie alloctone di planarie terrestri e una possibile sottostima della loro reale presenza in Italia.

Flatworm shower: ecological preferences and unusual associations of the alien flatworms Obama and Caenoplana (Platyhelminthes: Geoplanidae) in the Veneto region
Obama nungara is one of the South American species of terrestrial flatworm that has spread to several European countries in recent years, including Italy, through human activities. Following the discovery in the Veneto region, near the town of Este in the province of Padua, of the first established stable population of this species, the temperature, humidity and weather conditions have been monitored where the specimens were collected. The relationship between specimens found and rainfall events is highlighted here in order to better understand the ecological preferences and possible monitoring strategies for this species. Nei Monti Lessini orientali (vicentini), alla confluenza tra le valli del Chiampo e dell’Agno, sulle pendici meridionali del Monte Main negli anni Ottanta del secolo scorso era in attività una cava di “Marmi di Chiampo”, ben nota per i ricchissimi ritrovamenti paleontologici. L’eccezionale esposizione prodotta dallo scavo è circa parallela alla direzione di estensione del graben Alpone-Agno, un struttura paleogenica coeva col magmatismo mafico ed ultramafico del Veneto occidentale e del Trentino meridionale. Ciò ha messo in luce numerose faglie normali che hanno accomodato l’estensione. Tre banchi carbonatici intercalati a depositi vulcano-detritici stratificati mostrano una inclinazione verso est che aumenta progressivamente verso il basso, mentre le vulcano-areniti stratificate mostrano un rapido aumento di spessore da ovest verso est. La sezione a forma triangolare, ora in parte obliterata e non più accessibile, può essere interpretata come il riempimento del bacino formatosi sul blocco di tetto di una faglia listrica sinsedimentaria immergente verso ovest, oppure sul tetto di un blocco ettometrico basculato verso est secondo un modello di deformazione con stile a domino. A scala maggiore, lo stile a domino è osservabile anche nella deformazione del banco carbonatico intermedio. Questo stile deformativo spiega molto bene le brusche variazioni di spessore delle rocce vulcano-detritiche che sono state osservate in tutta l’area del graben.
Structural model of the Paleogene extensional deformation in the Main abandoned quarry (Arzignano, Vicenza)
Abstract
In the eastern Lessini Mountains (Vicenza) at the confluence of the Chiampo and Agno valleys on the southern slope of Monte Main, a “Chiampo marble” quarry was active in the 1980s, well known for its very rich paleontological finds. The exceptional exposure produced by the excavation, is approximately parallel to the extension direction of the Alpone-Agno graben, a Paleogene structure coeval with the mafic to ultramafic magmatism of the western Veneto and the southern Trentino. This allowed the observation of several normal faults which accommodated the extension. Three carbonate banks interlayered with stratified basaltic epiclastics show an eastern dip increasing downwards, while the thickness of the stratified epiclastics increases rapidly eastwards. The triangular-shaped section, presently partly obliterated and inaccessible, could be interpreted as the infilling of a basin developed on the hanging wall of a synsedimentary listric fault dipping west, or on the roof of a hectometric carbonate block eastward tilted in a domino model. At a larger scale the domino style is shown also by the intermediate carbonate bank. This deformation style explains well the rapid thickness variations of the epiclastics observed throughout the entire graben area.
